By: Sir Eddie Sumapig
The Knights of Columbus Council 13708 of St. Vincent Ferrer Parish, Babatngon, Leyte in the Visayas Jurisdiction, Philippines, has launched a project on solid waste management entitled “Sagip Kalikasan, Segregate and Recycle” on August 31, 2008. The launching was highlighted by street parade around the Poblacion of Babatngon, wherein brother knights had brought along with them recyclable solid wastes like: plastic container, cartoons, tin cans, scrap metals, and the like. The parade was participated in by the drum and bugle corps of Juan S. Tismo National High School of Babatngon, Leyte.

Generally, the project aims to create awareness among the local residents on how environmental degradation and its ill-effects can be prevented by simply inculcating positive values within the family, and specifically it aims to: 1) help brother knights find easy money for their monthly dues, 2) develop entrepreneurial skills among brother knights specially those who have no fixed income, 3) cleans the environment, 4) helps build the church.
The launching of “Sagip Kalikasan, Segregate and Recycle” was attended by our District Deputy Sir Knight Reynaldo Galapon and witnessed by Sir Knight Gregorio Eco --- the Grand Knight of Council 8236, St. Jude Parish of Tacloban City.

This project was conceived by Bro. Raul Gabriana and fully supported by the Council’s Grand Knight Sir Knight James L. Engle and Rev. Fr. Virgilio L. Cañete, the Parish Priest of St. Vincent Ferrer Parish, Babatngon, Leyte and K of C Chaplain. During the opening program, Rev. Fr. Cañete stressed that this project will create values formation within family members and would instill on them how important is our mother earth --- being destroyed by un-enlightened local residents through improper disposal of their waste.
